Banksman / Reversing Assistant training ensures that you meet your legal requirements and reduces the risk of expensive accidents when carrying out reversing manoeuvres. We complete all the training at the employer’s site.

Our training will ensure that staff will have the competence required to reverse or manoeuvre vehicles by signals either individually or as a team.

The course aims to ensure HGV reversing operations carried out in a competent way, reduce of risk of injury to staff and members of the public and reduce vehicle and property damage caused by reversing vehicles.

WHAT IS A BANKSMAN?

Traffic marshall (Banksman) are operatives trained to direct vehicle movement on or around site. They are often called Traffic Marshals

CAN WE STILL USE BANKSMEN FOR REVERSING VEHICLES?

Yes, but only if trained and authorised. There is a hierarchy of control, which places segregation at the top. Banksmen should only be used in circumstances where other control measures are not possible.

HOW CAN WE KEEP BANKSMAN SAFE?

Ensure that they are trained and competent to direct moving vehicles
Provide a protected position from which they can work in safety
Provide distinctive ‘hi viz’ clothing for identification
Tell drivers that if they can’t see the Banksman they should stop immediately
Agree on the use of standard signals

WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?

Every year, about 50 people are killed and more than 5000 people are injured in accidents involving workplace transport (www.hse.gov.uk/statistics). The most common causes are people falling from or being struck by a vehicle, objects falling from a vehicle, or vehicles overturning.

Nearly a quarter of all deaths involving vehicles at work occur during reversing. Many other reversing accidents do not result in injury but cause costly damage to vehicles, equipment and premises. Most of these accidents can be avoided by taking simple precautions, which will be explained during the course.

ASSESSMENT

The Course will be assessed in 2 ways:

PART 1: PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT:
Individuals will demonstrate the correct knowledge for directing a vehicle

PART 2: THEORETICAL
Understanding the roles of both the Driver and the Banksman.
Following a multi-choice question paper at the end of the course
Learners will be made aware of the Current Legislation (Safety signs & signals Regulations 1996)

CERTIFICATE

Learners who successfully complete this course will be awarded a Traffic Banksman Training Certificate of attendance, and a certificate of competence valid for 3 years.

We follow and teach the hand signals as it is recommended by the HEALTH AND SAFETY EXECUTIVE (HSE) You’ll find the standard signals in the Health and Safety (Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 L64, or watch the video Workplace transport – Banksman’s signals

There are no pre-requisites to enrol on this course however candidates must have the physical ability to carry out the procedures in this course.

Traffic Marshall Course Overview

Traffic Marshall training ensures that an organisation meets its legal requirements and reduces the risk of costly accidents when carrying out common, but dangerous, reversing manoeuvres. The job of the banksman is to guide drivers and make sure reversing areas are free of pedestrians.

Additional Information

All learners should be familiar with the latest edition of The Highway Code.

Learners should wear suitable clothing, bearing in mind that the practical aspects of this course will be taught outdoors.

A good-sized area of the yard, that is not in use, must be made available to conduct the training to ensure trainer and learner safety. This must not involve using a public road.

A vehicle must be supplied for use during training. We recommend that the type of vehicle supplied is similar to the type the yard is usually in receipt of, but if this is not possible a car can be used as long as the back windows are covered to get a realistic view of bringing a vehicle in safely.

In order to ensure the interaction between the learners and the tutor is spread evenly and effectively, and to ensure the courses are fully delivered in accordance with the Scheme rules, the maximum number of learners allowed on a course is ten.
